Quinoa
Specifically popular with ketoers, quinoa is a protein-rich food that’s also fiber-friendly, so a lot of diets incorporate it.
However, we think it’s time we all agree that protein-rich food is simply not worth it. Not only is it a hassle to prepare and is highly bitter if not prepared correctly, but it’s also just not as tasty as dieters claim.
Chia seeds
Perhaps one of the most popular foods in diets, chia seeds are known for their antioxidant count and are also rich in fiber.
So these little buggers are used to ease constipation while dieting. However, chia seeds may ironically cause stomach issues because they swell up like a balloon after a while. They’re also weird to nibble on and get stuck in the throat. Nope!
Kale
Ugh. Almost every diet (save for the carnivore diet) uses kale because it’s considered an amazing superfood that simply can’t be beaten.
But you know what health nuts and dieters don’t think about? How bad it tastes or how weird its texture is. Kale is used so much that it’s become an everyday diet occurrence, so it’s pretty much overrated.
Goji berries
Goji berries are loaded with antioxidants and have a great vitamin C concentration, so they’re typically favored in fruit-friendly diets.
However, goji berries have an acquired taste that may not go down with everyone. They’re also ridiculously expensive compared to other fruits and berries, which only dilutes our interest. Oh well, it’s just a berry; we’ll get over it, right?
Lemongrass
A popular herbal concoction in Asia, lemongrass tea is rich in quercetin, an anti-inflammatory component.
However, lemongrass isn’t all that good. Its tea can be quite bitter because of the herb’s distinct flavor, so it doesn’t really mesh well with some eaters. It may also trigger allergic reactions in some people. It’s also just plain boring.
Flaxseeds
The richest source of lignan, a compound that may lower the risk of heart disease and even breast cancer, flaxseed is popular for a reason.
That being said, it’s too popular. This healthy food is bland, and despite being cheap, they don’t bring much to the table except for regulating the stomach. They also have a nasty sticking habit, which can cause choking.
Kombucha
This fermented tea hails from Korea, China, and even certain East European nations, so it was quickly popularized after people discovered its healthy probiotic content.
However, kombucha became too popular too fast. Kombucha has a wildly intense flavor, which doesn’t go away even with its flavorful variety. It’s also weirdly expensive for something you could make at home.
Black rice
Black rice isn’t just a nutritious source loaded with minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants; it also has an aesthetic appeal.
And while black rice may be more nutritious than white rice, it’s not worth the price or the effort. You spend way longer trying to cook and clean black rice than on other food, and its taste may not mesh well with every sauce/gravy.
Hemp seeds
Hemp seeds are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants and have a generally high nutrition profile.
However, hemp seeds have an extremely high-calorie count for their size. Regularly eating them could be dangerous and even cause health problems. Plus, it’s not like they have a particularly good flavor, so it’s okay to kick them to the curb.
Agave nectar
Agave nectar is considered one of the best natural sweeteners because of its low glycemic index. But it’s kind of like the devil in disguise.
Agave nectar still has a relatively high sugar count, which can be dangerous when too much is consumed. It’s also a bit too sweet, the kind that leaves your throat feeling itchy and dry. That kind. Plus, it’s extremely expensive.
Brussel sprouts
Um, okay, we all know where this is going. Yes, Brussels sprouts are healthy and are rich in fiber, antioxidants, blah blah blah.
Let’s get to the real thing. Brussel sprouts are practically gross; they taste inedible, they’re incredibly hard to nail down when cooking, and they are just not worth the hassle. They also lead to nasty stomach issues in some people.
Broccoli
Like its smaller neighbor, broccoli holds the same reservations as Brussels sprouts. This cruciferous veggie is nutritious, but is it really worth it?
Broccoli is an incredibly weird-tasting vegetable, and that’s not even the worst of it. You have to wash broccoli several times to ensure it’s clean because its florets can contain tiny insects that aren’t even visible unless firmly shaken out. Yuck!
Almond Milk
Do you know that almond milk is not healthier than regular milk? Sure, it is dairy-free which is important for many people, but nutritionally speaking, it is no better than a regular glass of cow's milk.
So why are we still obsessing over almond milk? Let's just go back to regular, tasty whole milk.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has been trending for about a decade now. While we are all about cooking with coconut oil, it is about time we gave some other oils their due. Classic olive oil is always a great choice and hemp seed oil seems pretty cool too. Let's cook with something new and give coconut oil a break.
Acai Berries
Acai berries became super popular in the last few years thanks to their chocolate-like flavor and massive quantity of antioxidants. While we love a good acai bowl, they are seriously overpriced and overrated.
Most acai bowls have way more sugar than actual berries making them unhealthy. The berries also have so much fiber that they can quickly cause cramping, diarrhea, and bloating.
Eat acai bowls knowing that you are probably not getting all the benefits that you may have been led to believe.
Charcoal Foods
The bold black color of activated charcoal foods used to look pretty cool. Now, we aren't so sure we want to eat black foods. Imagine what that is doing to your insides! It can't be good. Plus, activated charcoal has a subtle, weird taste. We are over it!
Tofu
We know that tofu has lots of healthy plant-based proteins but that doesn't make us like it. Tofu is spongy and weird with almost zero flavor. We have tried frying it, baking it, and marinating it but it never gets any better. We are about to ditch the tofu forever.
