Buying chocolate-covered strawberries at a pastry shop will cost you quite a bit of money. Save your money and make these super easy white chocolate-covered strawberries instead. You will be amazed by how easy it is to make this picture-perfect, bite-sized dessert. Make them all spring long to really celebrate berry season in style.
Does white chocolate taste good with strawberries?
Strawberry with white chocolate tastes delicious together! I actually prefer white chocolate covered strawberries to any other kind of chocolate as the flavor of white chocolate is milder so it lets the taste of the strawberries shine. Dark chocolate has a prominent flavor that can be overpowering, and therefore in my opinion, white chocolate-covered strawberries are the best.
Should strawberries be cold before dipping in chocolate?
It is not necessary to chill the strawberries before dipping them in white chocolate, they can be at room temperature. But white chocolate covered strawberries are best when made with fresh, firm strawberries, and if you are concerned about the strawberries spoiling, keeping them in the fridge will help.
What is the best white chocolate to dip in strawberries?
To learn more about white chocolate, read my white chocolate baking guide.
When making white chocolate dipped strawberries, it is important to use good-quality white chocolate. White chocolate contains no cocoa solids, so it is not technically chocolate, although legally, it can be labeled as such.
White chocolate is actually made from cocoa butter, sugar, milk products, and a fatty substance called lecithin and is often flavored further with vanilla too. Due to its different chemical profile, it behaves differently to dark or milk chocolate, and this can make it harder to work with!
Using cheaper, lower-quality white chocolate will affect the outcome of this recipe so try to avoid it. Reputable quality brands like Callebaut, Lindt, and Valrhona are the best white chocolate to dip strawberries in.
Although candy melt is popular - as it is easy to work with and no need to temper it - it is really far from being real chocolate; therefore, I do not recommend using it.
Ingredient notes
- 20 Fresh strawberries: Use ripe, fresh, and firm strawberries preferably with the stalks still attached as it makes them much easier to dip!
- 1 cup White chocolate: The quality of chocolate can vary, and to get the best results, use the best quality white chocolate you can find. I recommend Callebaut white chocolate chips or a Lindt white chocolate bar.
- Sprinkles (optional): You can enjoy your homemade white chocolate-covered strawberries with sprinkles or as they are - it's up to you.
- Pink food coloring (optional): This is also optional, but if you fancy pink and white chocolate-covered strawberries, choose a high-quality gel color like Americolor gel.
You could also use Pink Ruby Chocolate to coat these strawberries. Check out my article on what is ruby chocolate.
How to melt white chocolate
For more details, read my how to melt chocolate chips article.
- If using a double boiler: Cut chocolate into small chunks or use good quality chocolate chips eg. Callebaut. Then, melt chocolate in a double boiler, or in a bowl over a saucepan of just simmering, but not boiling water. You do not really need a super hot temperature to melt chocolate, it will easily melt even at a lower setting. Do not let the bowl touch the water, and make sure that no water gets into the chocolate.
- If using a microwave: Yu can also melt white chocolate in the microwave on the low setting in a microwave-safe bowl. Again, cut the chocolate into small chunks or use chocolate chips. In the microwave chocolate melting method, ideally, use a plastic bowl as the chocolate can easily burn in a glass bowl. Stir every 20-30 seconds until fully melted.
Top Tip: Make sure that you do not overheat the white chocolate or it can become grainy. Heat the white chocolate only until it is fully melted and then remove it from the heat.
How to make white chocolate-dipped strawberries
- Rinse and dry the strawberries completely using paper towels to gently blot away the excess water.
- Dip the strawberries. Hold the strawberry by the stalk and green leaves, and then dip the strawberries into melted white chocolate either fully or just ¾ of the way.
- Allow any excess white chocolate to drip off and gently shake the strawberries before placing them on a prepared baking sheet lined with a non-stick liner or parchment paper.
- Chill the white chocolate strawberries in the fridge to set for 30 minutes. Serve chilled.
Top Tip: Melt the chocolate in batches if you are making a lot of white chocolate-dipped strawberries. This will prevent the white chocolate from becoming too cool and gloopy.
Flavor variations and substitutions
- After dipping strawberries in white chocolate, dip them in some crumbled cookies like Oreos or this strawberry shortcake crumble to give them some crunch.
- Use an edible gold leaf or gold luster spray to create white chocolate-covered strawberries with a gold sheen.
- Try dipping the strawberries in half dark semisweet chocolate and half white chocolate to get some color and taste variation.
- To make pink chocolate-covered strawberries, mix a small amount of pink gel food coloring into the melted white chocolate before dipping the strawberries, or drizzle it over the top afterward.
Expert Tips
- If you have removed the stalk from your strawberries, spear the top with a fork or a cocktail stick to dip strawberries into melted chocolate. If you use your fingers, it can get messy very fast!
- The best white chocolate for dipping is real chocolate like Callebaut or Lindt and not candy melts
- Don't burn the white chocolate; be sure to melt it slowly and evenly using one of the methods I recommend.
